Foucault’s last lectures provoke us to rethink the influence of governmentality studies within geography and to apply and test it in new ways. They reinforce long-standing campaigns within and beyond geography, which insist that we study knowledge and truth claims as embodied and materially manifested, with all the potential for insurgence and creative disruption this focus allows. Foucault proposed the concept of governmentality for the first time in his lectures at the Collège de France in 1978 and 1979 (2004; 2007). The notion derives from the French word gouvernemental , meaning “concerning government” (see Senellart, 2 004: 406). The word To end the lecture of the day, Foucault then says that he will next show how this governmentality was born, [first], from the archaic model of the Christian pastorate and, second, by drawing support from a diplomaticmilitary model, or rather, technique, and finally, third, how it could only acquire its present dimensions thanks to a set of very specific instruments, the formation of which is exactly contemporaneous with the art of government, and which is called, in the old, seventeenth 2021-03-04 · DOI: 10.1093/cdj/bsy049 Abstract It is widely accepted that Michel Foucault's 'governmentality lectures' constituted a seminal moment in the history of neoliberal studies. Governmentality is a concept first developed by the French philosopher Michel Foucault in the later years of his life, roughly between 1977 and his death in 1984, particularly in his lectures at the Collège de France during this time. The concept has been elaborated further from an "Anglo-Neo Foucauldian" perspective in the social sciences, especially by authors such as Peter Miller, Nikolas Rose, and Mitchell Dean. Governmentality The idea of governmentality, as patented by Foucault (1991), offers a second horizon in relation to education policy scholarship. A number of researchers have noted the fragmentary and uncollected nature of Foucaulťs writing on governmentality, a line of enquiry that emerged in the latter period of his work.

Governmentality can be understood as: the organized practices through which Michel Foucault, Governmentality (a lecture at the College de France given on 1 Febuary 1978) Foucault starts his lecture with an observation, that in the early modern time, a formerly popular genre “mirrors of princes” is replaced by a new literary form, “presented as arts of government.” (126—7). He provides a wider context to this phenomenon: during the sixteenth century, the questions of government—government of children, of souls, of oneself, etc.—appears on the agenda. In these lectures, Foucault examines the art or activity of government both in its present form and within a historical perspective as well as the different ways governmentality has been made thinkable and practicable. Foucault's thoughts on political discourse and governmentality are supplemented by the essays of internationally renowned scholars.
